Nothing beats an icy margarita and a plate of tacos on a warm sunny day. We love mi up margaritas at home since we can experiment with different flavor combinations and puree up fruit to sweetness rather than a sugary margarita mix. Did you know that a serving of store-bought margarita mix can have up to 30 grams of sugar per serving?
The American Heart Association recommends that women limit their sugar intake to about 20 grams of sugar per day and 32-36 grams per day for men. That one margarita has the total amount of sugar you are to consume in an entire day! Don't worry though, you don't have to give up margaritas completely this summer. This lightened up, fruit sweetened strawberry mint margarita is the perfect alternative with less than half the sugar of a typical margarita but all the flavor.
Strawberry Mint Margaritas
(Makes two ten ounce margaritas)
- 2 cups fresh, halved strawberries
- 3 ounces silver tequila
- 1 1/2 ounces Grand Marnier
- 3-4 fresh mint leaves
- Juice from 1 lime
- 2 teaspoons sugar or simple syrup (adjust to preference)
- 2-3 cups ice cubes
- Margarita Salt
- Add the strawberries, tequila, Grand Marnier, mint, sugar, and lime juice to a blender and puree until smooth.
- Add the ice cubes and pulse until smooth.
- Prepare 2 glasses by rubbing the squeezed lime along the rim of each glass. Pour margarita salt onto a small plate and roll the rim of each glass in salt to cover.
- Pour margarita mix into each glass and serve. Garnish with a strawberry and mint leaf.
