Sadie knows the world can sometimes be a challenging place. The 9-year-old was born with Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy, which limits her ability to walk. After spending years relying on crutches, wheelchairs and walkers, she was intimately aware of how the devices she used every day worked to get her where she was going. One day the aspiring fairy-tale writer who loves to read became frustrated with the curbs at her local library, so she came up with a big idea!
During one of her many extended hospital stays that left her bedridden, Sadie decided that if she added a few extra wheels to her walker, it could be more like an all-terrain vehicle to climb over curbs or stairs. With her younger sister Claire as a co-creator and her whole family's support, Sadie built the . It worked! Sadie won "Best Use of Wheels" at her school's Invention Convention. Here's a look at Sadie on the Amazing Curb Climber's first test run.
Sadie shared her story with , an online publication at Boston Children's Hospital, where she receives care. Thanks to one of her brothers loaning her a chroma-key green screen and another brother offering up a wooden curb he used for skateboarding, Sadie and Claire put together a video showing the features of the Amazing Curb Climber. You can follow Sadie's story about her climber and her brave adventures dealing with CP on her Facebook page .
Sadie's invention showed the world that with hope and determination she can overcome the obstacles in her path. She lifts her voice to show kids that they can change how the world defines them too.
